Only the Forgotten is New
A film by Mona Schier

Only the Forgotten is New started as a small idea of making a documentary about my grandfather's personal and unique trauma as the son of a Nazi in the second world war. I think forgetting is the first step to making the same mistakes again and that is why people have to learn from the trauma the generations before them had to go through already.

I wanted to reach and touch people through art and used the filmmaking style of live-action in combination with animation to provide a great mix between information and emotion.

Through film festivals and a lot of passionate creatives, this project became way bigger than I have ever thought.
The proof of concept for the feature movie is in the post-producing phase at the moment.

About

Hi! I am Mona! After I finished high school, I moved to Berlin to work at Studio71, a leading global digital media, and entertainment company, where I gained a lot of experience managing large campaigns and digital projects. To follow my dream of directing movies, I moved to Breda in The Netherlands to  study “Creative Business”. I have worked on several projects outside of the University and learned more about the technical parts of filmmaking, storytelling and deepened my passion for photography.

With my first documentary “Tommy and Rowan”, I won my first award for “Best Film” and "Best Cinematography" at the BUas film festival. Later I moved to England and visited specialized courses on "documentary filmmaking" at the Bournemouth University.
Subsequently, I started working as a creative editor in the video department of the world's biggest festival "Tomorrowland"  in Antwerp.

Then I decided to work more on my own passion projects again. So I started my, so far, most significant and most difficult documentary project called "Only the Forgotten is New". By pitching the concept of the short documentary I won the "FEST Film Lab Award" at the FEST Film Festival in Portugal and a prize from the "Young Creatives, Pitching Night".
